There are two types of USB connections, a USB A (rectangular, square-cornered shape) and USB C (a smaller, rounded edged shape). You can see above in the image the two types. Most modern computers have both, however some (such as MacBooks) only have USB C.
An ethernet port on your hub, will allow your device an instant, reliable wired Fast Ethernet, Gigabit, or 2.5G connection. Wired connections add speed and extra security to your network. Fast ethernet will support up to 100mbps, Gigabit will support up to 1 gig (1000mbps) and is the current standard, but for superfast internet and networks, some hubs can support up to 2.5 gig.
USB A ports will be required to connect and charge added devices, such as mobile phones, mice and usb dongles.
An additional USB C port will replace the port used by the hub and allow you to connect an additional device, this port will also support Power delivery – allow the hub to charge your devices.
PD3.0 – With PD 3.0, you can charge your laptop at the same time as connecting to your USB peripheral devices. Simply connect your USB-C charger to the hub’s USB-C port to provide power through the hub and to your laptop.
A HDMI port on your hub, will allow you to add a second screen at up to 4K resolution. Add a monitor or TV for a more office like experience at home, better efficiency with two screens and allow avoid eyestrain and bad posture from working on a laptop.
A card reader on your hub, will allow you to access data on an SD or micro SD card in seconds, allowing a fast connection between your mobile or camera and your Laptop/other device. It will also transfer data via usb 3.0 of up to 5Gbps for the fastest connectivity.
